I had an awesome conversation with someone yesterday and it really made me contemplate this question…
Do you know who you were before trauma ever affected you?
That question has changed everything for me.
Even right this second as I read that question a mix of emotions comes up.
For most of my life, I believed I was becoming a better version of my broken self.
I thought healing meant God slowly polishing all the rough edges trauma had created.
I believed I was permanently and inherently flawed because of what had happened to me and what I had done to hurt others.
I believed that God could brush off the dirt and fix me up a bit but I would always be a little broken.
But that’s not what He was doing.
He was restoring me.
I spent decades living in survival. Trauma had shaped the way I thought, the way I loved, the way I trusted, the way I protected myself. I couldn’t tell where I ended and my survival strategies began.
I thought those behaviors were my personality.
I thought they were just “who I am.”
Then through a very real and very deep encounter with the Holy Spirit, I had a revelation.
God wasn’t trying to just get the “bad” out…He was bringing me all the way back to my original design.
And although my spirit became alive in an instant, my mind still had years of survival to unlearn.
That confused me for a while.
I wondered why I still reacted the way I did.
Why fear still plagued me. Why people-pleasing, self-protection, defensiveness, and anxiety still affected me so deeply.
Then I realized something.
Salvation is instantaneous.
Transformation is progressive.
When you factory reset a device, it is completely restored to its original operating system.
But you still have to learn how to use it again.
You have to remove what doesn’t belong, install what is True, and stop operating from old patterns that no longer define it.
That’s what God has been doing in me.
He wasn’t trying to make something beautiful out of my brokenness.
He was restoring me to the original design He intended before sin, trauma, fear, shame, and survival ever distorted the way I lived.
Healing, for me, no longer means becoming someone better.
It means becoming someone Truer. Someone that walks in the confidence of who I was always meant to be.
Free from the false versions of myself that were built to survive.
Free from believing I had to earn love, protect myself from everyone, or live as though danger was always around the corner.
Today, I know who I am.
Not because trauma tells me. Because Christ does.
And every day I choose to think, respond, love, trust, and live from that restored identity instead of the one survival created.
I don’t believe God is interested in giving us a spiritual makeover.
I believe He’s performing a complete restoration.
Not just healing our wounds.
But renewing our minds, restoring our hearts, and teaching us how to live from the original design He had for us all along.
I want to say this a little softly because I think some of us may need to sit with it for a while.
But here it is…
Your trauma is not your identity. 🫣
Your survival strategies are not your personality.
And your healing is not ultimately the testimony.
Those things all keep the focus on you.
What happened to you, how you survived, or even how far you’ve come.
But the Gospel shifts the focus.
It moves our eyes from the trauma…
to the One who restores.
To be reset doesn’t mean you pretend your trauma never happened.
It means it no longer has permission to tell you who you are. Boom.💥
The scars may remain.
The memories may remain.
The story will always be part of your journey.
But it is no longer your identity.
The testimony of my life is not the trauma I survived.
It isn’t even my ability to overcome.
My testimony is the free gift of grace my Father gave me when He found me in survival, called me His daughter, and began restoring every part of me back to His original design.
Not just healing my wounds…
But renewing my mind.
Restoring my heart.
Teaching my body to live from peace instead of protection.
Replacing lies with truth.
Fear with trust.
Striving with rest.
My story is not about becoming a stronger survivor.
It’s about becoming the woman God designed before sin, trauma, and a broken world ever taught me I had to survive.
That is the miracle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Not that God made a better version of my brokenness…
But that through Christ, He is restoring me to the image He intended from the very beginning.
And I remind myself often when I want to think, feel or act out of an old mindset…
That isn’t who you are…
In fact it was never who you were.
You just needed a reset.
Do you know who you were before trauma?
